Using the Structural Remediation Tool (Tags and Reading Order)
- Open the Accessibility Report
- Open the Structural Remediation Tool by selecting the Launch Button – this will open the tool
- Toggle on the Display Reading Order slide at the top of the screen if it is not already on
- Note: The drop down arrow to the side of the toggle lets you select reading order and tag types. We recommend turning both on.
- On the left side of the screen you will see the document with boxes around each tagged item (paragraph, heading, image, etc…)
- The number at the top left of each box is the reading order of the item
- The Letter(s) at the top right of each item is the tag type
- On the right side is the tag tree – the tags match the order found on the left side.
- If the reading order or tag element is incorrect, you can use the three dots to the right of each item to open a menu to move or edit the tags.
- Use the Plain Text tool at the top of the page (next to the trash icon) to check the reading order once you have finished making your corrections
- Save your changes using the Save Icon (next to the Plain Text tool) at the top of the page
- Once you have verified / corrected the reading order and tag structure of the document, toggle the Verify Reading Order slide.
- Exit the tool by selecting the Exit arrow to the top left of the screen

Pro Tip
Once in a while, you will get a PDF that did not tag very well and has a lot of errors or things out of order. It can often be worthwhile to try retagging the document
- Select the Retag PDF button in the top right of the screen
- It will pop up a window asking if you really want to retag,
- Select retag
- Wait for the document to update or close and come back later
- Relaunch the Structural Remediation tool
- Check the Results and review/correct reading order and tags
