Safe and Wise Use
AI detectors offer a helpful data point, but they should not be used as a sole determinant of academic misconduct. They are subject to bias, false-positive and negative reports. A syllabus statement is required. You must include an AI policy statement in your syllabus if you plan to use an AI detector with student submissions. Please review these guidelines to ensure fair application:
- Expect false positives: No AI detector is 100% accurate.
- Avoid auto-penalizing: Do not issue grades or disciplinary actions based only on a score.
- Initiate a dialogue: Use the report as an invitation to discuss the writing process with the student.
- Verify student knowledge: Ask the student to explain their arguments, vocabulary, or sources.
- Consider baseline writing: Compare the flagged assignment against a student’s diagnostic or in-class writing submission.
