Kelsie Powell, Instructor in the Nursing program at Chemeketa uses virtual reality simulations with students to augment their learning.

Using a VR program called UbiSim, students are able to work through virtual scenarios to gain skills and enhance their learning. The program allows for complete customization of scenarios, including patient appearance, voice, and vital signs.

Students gain access to a web based platform where they can view patient charts, review medications, and prepare for various clinical scenarios before they engage in virtual reality with a simulated patient. The platform also includes built-in learning objectives, debriefing sessions, and post-simulation quizzes.

During the simulations, students are instructed to carry out a specific set of orders. If the patient’s condition changes, students must be able to notice those clues, and then provide necessary interventions. These scenarios are designed to teach specific skills and objectives, and are later reviewed and discussed with the facilitator during a debrief session.

Students work together in groups of two during these simulations while a third student observes in the physical space. Each student will complete a total of three scenarios over a period of three hours. Many students have reported having positive experiences and found the technology to be an effective tool to support their learning.

Kelsie emphasized that while VR can reduce stress and enhance critical thinking skills, it cannot replace the tactile learning and physical tasks essential to nursing education. She explained that VR simulations can complement traditional training methods, offering highly engaging and cost-effective immersive learning experiences.

The Nursing program recently invested in new Meta Quest 3 headsets allowing students to interact in VR simulations without being tethered to a computer. Academic programs interested in utilizing VR technology in their curriculum may contact the Nursing program to inquire about availability and use of this equipment.
