Join the Oregon Community College Distance Learning Association (OCCDLA) AI Literacy Workgroup’s Faculty AI Community and Exchange (FACE).

As Generative AI becomes a standard tool in the academic toolkit, faculty across Oregon are asking a fundamental question: If AI can produce the “answer,” how do we ensure students are still doing the “thinking”?

We invite you to join a statewide effort to build a community of practice dedicated to human-centered pedagogy.

Featured Session: Preserving Critical Thinking in the AI Era

Guest Speaker: Inara Scott, Senior Advisor for Strategy and Innovation, OSU College of Business

In this session, Inara Scott will move beyond technical tutorials to address the cognitive core of education. She will share insights on how to maintain “desirable friction”, the mental effort necessary for learning, in an age of instant AI output.

Key Discussion Topics:

  • The Loss of “Friction”: Understanding how outsourcing cognition to AI can bypass the mental struggle required to develop deep critical thinking.
  • Process over Product: Shifting our focus from the final “answer” to the visible process of reasoning, making the student’s thinking transparent.
  • Human-in-the-Loop Pedagogy: Designing assignments that require active human intervention and reflective engagement.
  • Designing for Engagement: Strategies to build trust and community, ensuring that AI enhances rather than replaces the instructor-student connection.
