Faculty Spotlight

Over winter and spring terms, the GenAI Community of Practice spent time exploring Generative AI and its potential impact at the college. Participants included Jan VanStavern (English and Writing), Kevin Smith (Film Arts and Writing), Theresa Yancey (Reference & Instruction Librarian), Gary Kuhn (Communication), Michael Ward (Writing), Andrew Scholer (Computer Science) and Bill Hamlin (Center for Academic Innovation).

Early in winter 2024, conversations centered around the basics of GenAI and large language models (LLMS) – how these technologies work, and initial perceptions and feelings about them. Discussions shifted to how students in the participants’ classes are using GenAI tools and how faculty might adapt course content and assessment methods to either embrace or restrict further use. Participants were tasked to create a plan of action for how they could further incorporate GenAI into their teaching or workflow and will be completing that by the end of spring 2024 to hopefully implement in future terms. Additionally, the research conducted by this group and the feedback gleaned from numerous discussions will inform the Center for Academic Innovation’s planning around professional development opportunities focusing on GenAI.
